Meet Melissa
Melissa Detwiler, a seasoned tennis instructor and visionary, began her journey in tennis at the age of 7 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Her dedication and talent led her to Nick Bollettieri’s Tennis Academy, where she secured a full scholarship at age 11 and again at 14. Melissa played the satellite circuit, later excelling at Clemson University and Boston University, contributing as a vital member of their tennis teams.
In 1992, Melissa shifted her focus to teaching and played a pivotal role in constructing the $2 million Burbank Tennis Center in Los Angeles. For three decades, she’s been coaching, spending over 13 years at Campbell Hall Episcopal School as the middle school tennis coach and director of the school’s elementary after-school tennis program. Melissa’s commitment extends beyond Campbell Hall, as she builds pre-school and elementary school programs across California.
Her coaching philosophy emphasizes consistency, hard work, and finding joy in the game. Melissa’s niche lies in working with young players, nurturing their skills, confidence, and enthusiasm. Her middle school teams at Campbell Hall have achieved multiple league victories, and she instils in her players the importance of giving their best effort, win or lose.
Beyond her coaching role, Melissa aspires to inspire children worldwide through the Adventures of Henry the Sports Bug book series. This endeavor includes an upcoming cartoon and plans to expand the Henry the Sports Bug After School Tennis program to preschools and elementary schools across the nation. Melissa’s nonprofit side aims to support schools in need, fostering early sports participation for a healthier and more confident future generation. Melissa’s extensive experience with tennis and her passion for teaching children inspired her to create The Adventures of Henry the Sports Bug, a book series designed to teach kids the benefits of sports through fun and engaging stories. Melissa believes, “Playing a sport and being athletic has so many lifelong benefits, and the ability to get those benefits and life lessons while having fun is priceless.”
